The extra board is a concept whereby you use a tool to schedule drivers and manage work schedules. You have drivers that work adhoc to cover vacation, PTO and time off and earn a meaningful living and be productive for the company.


Extra Board Creation and Utilization An “extra board”

is a concept where you hire or have “extra” company drivers at the facility. Typically, this is comprised of 10% of the total driving force of the facility. So, you have 100 drivers your extra board would be comprised of ten drivers. These drivers do extra work, and vacation or sick time coverage, etc. If a driver calls off in the middle of the night, you call the extra board to cover the work. This math is by no means the end all be all. It is just a guide for where to start. Depending on the depth of your driving force, you might need fifteen extra board drivers. But the expectation is that you will be tracking load splits on a daily basis and building new route schedules for the drivers out of these splits.
